Spire Sports Cars take their first OSS Race Win with an RLM Powered Car - 01/07/15

Spire Sports Cars have taken their first win in the OSS championship with their RLM powered car, piloted by Tim Grey. This feet was achieved despite everything seeming to work against them that weekend and the previous night with no sleep!

The story is best told by themselves, which is as follows:

So after an amazing weekend we felt it necessary to tell the whole story. The results from the weekend don't tell of what really happened.

Our plan was to go over to RLM Racing, our engine builders, on Thursday afternoon on the way to Snetterton. Then head off to set up Thursday evening, ready to test on Friday morning.

Unfortunately due to a sensitive gear shift control box that was making think it wanted to change gear at 7000 rpm we didn't find the problem until late in the evening so had to stay over and dyno in the morning.

We got to the circuit with half an hour to spare for the afternoon sessions.
The test sessions went well, engine felt great and the car felt fantastic.
Qualifying on Saturday went well with P2 for the first two races, race 3 is decided by the finishing positions of race 2.

Race 1 on Saturday started well leading the first few laps and then running in p2 for a little while when the water temperature jumped up.
A few cool down laps didn't seem to help so Tim retired the car.

After some investigation, it looked to be a head gasket problem with bubbles appearing in the coolant. A call to the RLM guys and they said "get it here and we'll sort it". So we packed up an went back to the RLM workshop.
We arrived back at RLM around 8:30pm. Set about removing the ancillaries of the engine to remove the cylinder head. While we were doing that, engine guru Richard Webb put a camera down the spark plug holes to have a check of the bores.

This revealed that the bore may have cracked, so we took the engine out and got it on the bench.
Once the cylinder head was removed we were horrified to see that the plating that is applied to the bores had come off on two of the cylinders, damaging two Pistons. Something completely out of our or RLM's control.
After removing the sump and finding some of the plating material in the bottom, Richard said "let's pull it all apart and start again. It's the only way to do it properly".

The whole engine was stripped, crank out, valves out, every single part was hot washed checked and replaced if there was any doubt. All the valves relapped in. A new set of barrels and Pistons. The engine was finished at 04:30am on Sunday morning with us all working through the night.

While we were fitting the engine we frustratingly found a crack in the exhaust manifold. We didn't have a welder with us so that had to wait until we got back to the track.

05:30 we were back on the road heading for Snetterton.
We arrived back at 7:30 and by 8:00 we had a welder. Got the exhaust sorted and the rest of the car back together.
Hit the button, fired first time a few heat cycles and a top up with oil and coolant and we were out for race 2 when Tim had 2 green flag laps to run the engine in, not ideal but at least we were in the race.

Fortunately race 2 was wet so the engine didn't need to be rev'd to its maximum. The race went brilliant with Tim 2s a lap faster than the Juno and finished 27s in front.

What a result!! With no sleep and completely exhausted.

Race 3 was dry and Tim Started P1. This was an amazing race. Dropping to P2 on lap 3, the speed of Mike Jeveys Gunn down the straights was tough to live with but the Spire was better in the corners.
The biggest gap was 0.6s and this went on for 17 laps. Lap 18, the final lap was so close, Tim managed to stay close to the back of the Gunn down the back straight and got on the gearbox going around Corum corner. Mike went to the inside of the final corner and went too deep, Tim went to the outside and cut back underneath to come out in front and a drag race to the line meant Tim won by 0.094s.

A truly amazing result for us even without the sleepless night, so to achieve that result in the dry with no sleep is an amazing feeling.

We cannot thank the RLM racing guys enough!
Richard Webb, Acea Webb and Dan Phillips. You are amazing. Thank you!!

We at RLM would like to extend our congratulations to Spire, Paul and of course Tim for that amazing win in race 3.
